CO-HOUSING COMMUNITY

Pair work

Sep. 2021 - Dem. 2021

DESCRIPTION

For our site in Accrington, Hyndburn, we aim to design a co-housing scheme for families including young professionals, elderly people and also multi generational families. Initial site visit and study of demographics revealed that the young working population in Accrington was on a decline, which further suggested that the town needs certain interventions for regeneration. We found that many elderly and retired people and pensioners,  were lacking the company of young people around them, thus  we decided to create community housing scheme to foster a multi generational co-living space.  The idea is to priorities interactions between the different age groups as priority and design spaces to create symbiosis between them.
We also wanted to dedicate a space for Accrington’s people so that the communal aspect is shared with the public and not just the residents in a way that there is a clear division between the public space and private spaces, but with a slight overlap. The idea of a “two-century” home is also very fascinating and we have proposed a Mass Timber structural system as it provides for both sustainability and longevity since  Timber structures have proven to last more than 200 years. We also believe that in future if the needs change, this modern classic will be able to adapt easily due to disassembly and the circular economy.

There are some problems about the original building, but also new opportunities bring to the site.

Functional Division

Through this parti- diagram we have explored the connection between the public and private spaces in our scheme. The main idea for our scheme was to use divide the internal and external spaces by creating three blocks. They are arranged in a manner that they create a safe enclosed space for the families and at the same time give back to the public area with the introduction of the co-working space. Since the entire ground floor is left for commercial use,  the co-working and cafe space would best suit the function in this area.

Adapting to Accrington’s heritage our scheme inserts a new typology into Accrington s roofscapes. This modern classic located on peel street adds a new heritage value to the town by bringing in modernist design styles such vaulted ceilings, Timber framed atriums, by creating public spaces for people to interact over a coffee as well as creating a huge ecological communal garden for the residents. This modern classic can be considered as a grade 2 listed building in near future as it brings significant social impact in Accrington.

1:20 Physical Model

Through this model we wanted to explore the material qual-ities of our cafe space and the overall atmosphere it will create. Since this space is the key junction between the public and private spaces of our scheme, this sectional model helped to explore that junction further.
The model was also helpful to study the different materials that will be used for treating the elevations and interior finishes. We have proposed a Herringbone flooring pattern for the internal cafe space, and a simple polished concrete texture for the floor  above. The external walls are made using red accrington brick and since the whole structure is made from Glulam, we have proposed to keep the posts and vaulted ceiling exposed.
